What are the latest traffic violations in Tripura and their punishments?

As per the new Motor Vehicles Amendment Act, 2019, the following is the revised list of penalties and their fines enforced by Tripura Traffic Police:

What are the basic road safety rules to be observed in Tripura?

In Tripura, violation of road safety rules is a punishable offense. All categories of vehicles must comply with the following basic traffic rules:

  • Drive on the left: Drive on the left side of the road when driving. If there is no divider or lane, allow traffic to pass safely on your right.
  • Overtake from the right: Always overtake from the right after flashing the indicator or blowing the horn. Avoid overtaking in narrow lanes as it may pose a threat to the lives of others.
  • Respect the traffic police: Never disobey or argue with the police's proposals. Bribing an official is a punishable offense. Cooperate with the police to maintain smooth traffic on the road.
  • Respect traffic signals: You may have to pay a heavy fine if you jump a traffic signal. If there are pedestrians, wait for them to cross before moving your vehicle.
  • Follow the instructions: Never park your vehicle in a no-parking zone. Also, avoid parking at busy junctions or in the middle of the road. Your vehicle can become a nuisance to other motorists and cause accidents or chaos.
  • Understand road signs and signals: Every driver is required to understand and obey road signs and informational signs. These signs prepare/warn you of what is going to happen next. They also show what you are and are not allowed to do while driving in the lane ahead.
  • Make Way for Emergency Vehicles
  • If you see emergency vehicles like ambulances, police cars, or fire engines trying to pass, make way for them. Blocking their path may result in loss of life/property. Therefore it is considered a punishable offence.
  • Carry Relevant Documents: A vehicle owner should always carry the following documents in his vehicle:
  • For all vehicles: Driver's License, Registration Certificate, Insurance Certificate and Pollution Under Control (PUC) Certificate
  • For commercial vehicles only: Fitness Certificate and Tourist Permit
  • Honk: Honk only when necessary such as when overtaking, changing lanes, or passing through a narrow lane. Do not blow your horn in front of schools and hospitals.
  • Obey speed limits: Always obey speed limits when driving within the city or on highways. Driving or running at high speed on the road can lead to sudden death.
  • Use of lights: Use side indicator lights when changing lanes or turning. Also, use fog lights and emergency lights in case of heavy rain or fog. This will alert other drivers to maintain a safe distance while driving.
  • Do not use a mobile phone while driving: Never use a mobile phone while driving. If you receive an important call, first park your vehicle on the roadside and then use your mobile.
  • Never drink and drive: Drinking driving is a punishable offense throughout India. For this, you may have to pay very heavy fines, imprisonment, or a permanently suspended license. Before driving, make sure that your blood alcohol level is within the permissible limits.
  • Must be accompanied by a learner: A learner should never drive alone. He must have someone with a valid driving license sitting near the passenger seat.
  • Give preference to pedestrians: Always let pedestrians cross the road first. If there is a zebra crossing ahead, slow down your vehicle or stop. Make way for school-going kids and senior citizens.

Other Safety Rules for Two-Wheeler Drivers in Tripura:

  • Only one pillion rider: Two-wheelers can carry only two riders – a driver and a pillion passenger. Motorcycle and scooter riders are not allowed to triple-ride.
  • WEAR A SAFETY HELMET: Both the driver and the pillion rider must wear an approved safety helmet to protect against serious head injury. It is also advisable to wear knee and elbow guards.
Other Safety Rules for Four-Wheeler Drivers in Tripura:
  • Always wear a seat belt: It is necessary to wear a seat belt while traveling in a car. Apart from the driver, passengers other than the driver should also wear seat belts to avoid injury in the event of unexpected shocks, sudden braking or an accident. Children in the back seat must also have a harness or belt.
  • Use mirrors and indicators: Always adjust your rearview mirror before hitting the road. The rearview mirror called the third eye of the driver, is very helpful while taking turns, changing lanes, overtaking the vehicle, and reversing the vehicle. It is also a good practice to use indicators for turning right, turning left, and parking/stopping.
